Ukraine's history spans over 1500 years — from Kievan Rus, through Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth, Hetmanate, Russian Empire, USSR, to independent Ukraine 1991.

Kievan Rus (882-1240)

Oleg the Wise founded Kievan Rus 882. Volodymyr the Great baptized Rus 988. Yaroslav the Wise (1019-1054) — peak of power, Russkaya Pravda (first legal code). Mongol invasion 1240 — destroyed Kyiv.

Lithuanian-Polish Period (1320-1648)

Lithuania and Poland seized Ukrainian lands. Union of Lublin 1569 — Ukraine became part of Poland. Ukrainian Cossacks on southern frontier. Zaporozhian Sich.

Hetmanate and Uprisings (1648-1782)

Bohdan Khmelnytsky — 1648 uprising against Polish nobility. Pereyaslav Council 1654 — alliance with Moscow (later turned into Muscovite absorption). Ivan Mazepa — alliance with Swedes 1708 against Peter I, defeat at Poltava 1709.

Russian Empire (1782-1917)

Catherine II abolished Hetmanate 1764, Zaporozhian Sich 1775. Ukrainian language banned (Valuev Circular 1863, Ems Decree 1876). Taras Shevchenko — national poet. Western Ukraine under Austria — more freedoms.

Ukrainian Revolution (1917-1921)

February Revolution 1917 — Ukrainian People's Republic. Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Volodymyr Vynnychenko, Symon Petliura. War of Independence 1917-1921. Bolsheviks, Poles, Whites — all fought on Ukrainian soil. Defeat.

Soviet Ukraine (1922-1991)

UkrSSR founded 1922. Holodomor 1932-1933 — Stalin artificially caused famine, 4-7 million Ukrainians died. World War II — German occupation 1941-1944, millions died. Chernobyl 1986 — atomic disaster.

Independence (1991-today)

August 24, 1991 — Ukraine declared independence. Orange Revolution 2004. Revolution of Dignity 2014 — Maidan. Russian occupation of Crimea 2014. Full-scale invasion 2022 — heroic defence continues. Volodymyr Zelensky president.
